Derived rates explained: manage ten prices by changing one
Most hotels sell the same room at several prices that move together. Derived rates let you change the parent and have the family follow.

A derived rate is a price that follows another price by a rule — for example “Non-refundable = Standard − 10%” or “Bed & breakfast = Standard + €15”. Change the standard rate and every rate derived from it moves with it. A hotel with three room types and four rate plans has twelve prices per night; with derived rates it sets three.
A typical rate family
| Rate plan | Rule | When Standard is €100 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (parent) | Set by you | €100 |
| Non-refundable | Standard − 10% | €90 |
| Bed & breakfast | Standard + €15 | €115 |
| Non-refundable B&B | Non-refundable + €15 | €105 |
Raise Standard to €120 for a festival weekend and the family becomes €108, €135 and €123 — without touching them.
Percentage or fixed amount?
- Percentage for discounts tied to conditions (non-refundable, early booking, long stay). The saving scales with the price.
- Fixed amount for things with a real cost (breakfast, parking). Breakfast does not cost more on a festival weekend.
Traps to avoid
- Loops. A follows B, B follows A. A good system refuses to save it.
- Rounding. €89.10 looks odd on a booking page. Decide whether derived prices round, and to what.
- Overrides that are forgotten. A derived rate edited by hand on one date stops following its parent there. Make overrides visible.
- Channels that calculate their own. Some booking sites derive their own linked rates and ignore what you push for them.
In Revio
In the RevioLink and RevioCRS calendars a derived rate is marked with a paperclip and follows its parent. Rate plan linkage is editable — percentage or amount — with guardrails: a link that would create a loop is refused, and changes are previewed before they reach any channel.
Questions
Can a derived rate be derived from another derived rate?
In many systems, yes — a chain. Keep chains short; two levels are easy to reason about, four are not. And a system should refuse a loop, where A follows B and B follows A.
Do booking sites support derived rates?
Some channels calculate linked rates themselves and ignore prices pushed for them. Check how each channel treats linked rates, and push the final prices where the channel expects them.
What happens to restrictions on a derived rate?
It depends on the setup: some systems copy restrictions from the parent, others keep them separate. Decide deliberately — a minimum stay on a promotional rate may be exactly what you want, or exactly what you do not.
