How to get more direct bookings: 12 tactics that work for small hotels

Direct bookings grow from a handful of unglamorous things done well: a booking page that is quick and honest, a reason to book there, and a route back for every guest you already won.

Guests having breakfast on a sunny hotel terrace

A direct booking is one a guest makes with the hotel itself — on its own booking page, by phone or by email — with no booking site in between and no commission to pay. Growing them is less about one clever trick and more about removing every reason a guest who already found you would leave to book somewhere else.

Make the booking page as good as the booking sites

  1. Show the all-in price from the first screen. Guests compare. If your page reveals taxes and fees at the last step and Booking.com showed them up front, you look more expensive even when you are not.
  2. Be fast on a phone. Most hotel searches start on a mobile. Two screens to a price, three to a booking.
  3. Show real alternatives when dates are full. “No availability” ends the visit. “Not those three nights — but the 12th to the 15th, at this price” keeps it.
  4. Let guests book the way families travel. Children by age, several rooms in one booking, one payment.

Give a reason to book direct

  1. A lower direct price, shown honestly. Where your contracts allow it, a percentage off with the booking-site price struck through is the clearest reason there is. It must be true: the struck-through price should be the one the booking site actually shows. See rate parity.
  2. Something that is only direct. Late check-out, breakfast, parking, a flexible cancellation — whatever costs you little and matters to your guests.
  3. Your reviews, where guests can see them. Your Booking.com and Google scores beside the search box, linked to the source, answer the “can I trust this place?” question without the guest leaving to check.

Win the second stay

  1. Capture the email of every direct guest — and write to them after the stay with a reason to come back.
  2. Recognise returning guests and treat them as such.
  3. Promo codes that are given out, not advertised. A code in the thank-you email or on a card at check-out.

Be findable

  1. Link the booking page everywhere you already appear: Google Business Profile, Instagram and Facebook bios, confirmation emails, the signature of every email your team sends.
  2. Answer the phone and emails quickly. A guest who calls is already a direct booking. A missed call often becomes a Booking.com reservation ten minutes later.

Measure it

Track one number monthly: share of room revenue from direct bookings. Pair it with the commission you paid (see what a booking really costs) and you can put a euro value on each point you move.

How RevioDirect helps

RevioDirect is the hotel’s own booking page, configured in RevioCRS. It shows all-in prices from the first screen, books children by age and several rooms at once, offers real alternative dates when the stay is sold out, and can show a direct discount with the booking-site price struck through — true by construction, because it is the price Revio sends to those sites. Guests pay the hotel directly through the hotel’s own Stripe account. The fee is 2% of bookings the page produces, never of the hotel’s own phone reservations.

Questions

What share of bookings should be direct?

There is no universal target; it depends on location, guest mix and how many returning guests you have. Measure your own share by month and aim to move it a few points a year — every point is commission kept.

Do I need my own website to take direct bookings?

It helps, but a hosted booking page with your own address and branding is enough to start. You can link to it from your Google Business Profile, social media and confirmation emails.

Are promo codes worth it?

Yes, if they are given out rather than advertised. A visible empty code box sends guests away to hunt for one. Codes in a thank-you email, on a card at reception or in a returning-guest link work better.
